The TrueCrypt Debacle

If you haven't heard, the TrueCrypt site had a rather ominous, bizarre and puzzling message:

"WARNING: Using TrueCrypt is not secure as it may contain unfixed security issues

This page exists only to help migrate existing data encrypted by TrueCrypt.

The development of TrueCrypt was ended in 5/2014 after Microsoft terminated support of Windows XP. Windows 8/7/Vista and later offer integrated support for encrypted disks and virtual disk images. Such integrated support is also available on other platforms (click here for more information). You should migrate any data encrypted by TrueCrypt to encrypted disks or virtual disk images supported on your platform".

-- WTF? :/

The site now redirects to a SourceForge page, stating the same as above. Again. -- WTF? :/

Some say that unless we hear from the developers, it should be consider compromised. I am mostly of the same mindset on this one.

However. Steve Gibson offers insight and now hosts the last 'safe' TrueCrypt on his site: https://www.grc.com/misc/truecrypt/truecrypt.htm

Yes, but .... the damage has been done. Why should we trust the developers at this point? I do realize millions depend on TrueCrypt and Steve has done good with providing mirrors to the program.

In addition Arch Linux has provided information on a project to 'fork' TrueCrypt. The site is: http://truecrypt.ch/ Ya gotta love the open community :)

Bottom Line. Avoid TrueCrypt on SourceForge -- a.k.a. 'TrueCrypt 7.2'
